Hey, so this is the new soapbox for your truly, Mr Doug Boutwell. I’m not posting on the Boutwell Studio blog anymore, because Chenin’s taking over the wedding biz, and I’m off into the brave new world of assignment work. Ergo, a new blog, a new face, and eventually, the resurrection of dougboutwell.com.
Why am I doing this? Well, for one, I’m a little burnt on weddings. Blame it on not setting aside enough time for personal work over the last five years (okay, like NO personal photography, for all intents and purposes). Blame it on just wanting to go in a direction that our well-established client base might not like. Blame it on the breakneck pace of shooting weddings being at odds with my perfectionism. Whatever the case, I’m transitioning over the next year into a solo career as a fashion / portrait photographer for advertising and editorial clients. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
In the meantime, I’m wearing a few different hats. I’m still shooting weddings with Chenin for any Boutwell Studio clients that booked prior to January of this year. Which was some 30-odd weddings at the time. I’m also still running the Totally Rad Action Mix all by myself. I’ll be adding testimonials, video tutorials, downloadable demos, and also appearing at a couple trade shows over the next year or so. We also have the Anti-Workshop: Seattle coming up, and that takes a lot of time to prepare for.
And when I’m not busy doing all that… I get to shoot for my new portfolio. I’ve been feeling out some of where I want to take my photography, refining some of my skills, and learning how to get things done outside the wedding context. Super-cool!
And if that isn’t enough, there’s surfing, lots of great new music, classic arcade games, an escape-artist dog, and some other random ramblings from a guy whose brain is getting old and faulty much faster than his body. Should be fun! So bookmark this shit and let’s have some fun!

i applaud the bravery and the diversity.
diversity, i believe is an old, old, wooden ship.

speaking of ships- i heard it said once: “you’ll never walk on water if you won’t get out of the boat”

Well Done! Your move for change is both brave and admirable. I would wish you luck, but with your talent, you don’t need it.
Best Wishes. :)

Doug,
You’re a genius and taking risk comes with the territory. I know you will succeed at whatever you do even if it means eating peanut & jelly sandwiches–but you know what it builds character.
my best

Congratulations Doug. You are such an inspiration to me!
The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become. (Charles DuBois).
Can’t wait to see where this takes you and what you will become in the process.
