Doug Boutwell the occasional odd thought or image

Mystic, Connecticut

Well, after taking a redeye flight to North Carolina, then connecting there and heading to Providence, RI, and driving an hour south through rain and snow, I’m finally here (okay, it wasn’t that bad, but to be fair, it has NEVER snowed anywhere I’ve ever lived).

Anyway… it’s New England! Never been to Connecticut, and rarely been to the East Coast at all, but I always love that they have trees there. We don’t have much in the way of trees back home. Sounds silly, but it’s really pretty.

On the drive over there, I saw this little guy stranded in the road… felt kinda bad for him.

So I grabbed him out of the rain, and now he’s sitting in my rental car. Much happier. It was kinda cold out there, even for a stuffed animal.

Mystic itself has a cute little downtown area – sorta an old seaport town, which just looks cool all wet.

Loved the little drawbridge they had. Built in 1922, lotsa steel.

I also noticed this great old graveyard, which was wonderfully moody and somber under the heavy skies and blanket of snow. Graves dating back to the dawn of our country… in LA, something built pre-WWII is considered old, so it was novel for me to get to connect with people from centuries past via the way they chose to be remembered.

This one marker in particular was just wicked cool – looked like it was covered in ivy at one point, which enveloped and wrapped around it like a cocoon. It stood in the middle of a low, circular fence, with headstones arranged around it. Really neat-o.

So anyway, I’m hanging out here at the Hilton, meeting new peeps from the other coast, and waiting till 6pm, where I’ll be giving a seminar on kicking ass with Photoshop. Back in Cali on Tuesday!

Chenin, don’t worry. I neither heard about nor saw any sign of the puppy while attending the seminar here in Mystic. So I’m confident that Doug found a safe new home for the little guy. :)

Meanwhile, the gathering of photographers here at “Mystic 3″ was just electric, and Doug himself did a great job of explaining and illustrating some things about Photoshop that I’d actually used but hadn’t visualized in quite the same way he’d described. It was a blast seeing him up there again.

But I’ve got to say, Jenni and I missed YOU very much. We hope to see you BOTH sometime soon (no, it won’t be at WPPI this year).

    Hugs for ya both!

Mystic is a cute little place – I got to stop along the road when I was on my way to Providence to fly out from the East Coast back in July. Wish I was there when it was snowing to see the sights though!

Hey, Doug it was great meeting you in Mystic yesterday, you did a great job explaining the benefits of actions and how they actually work. Like I said keep on posting some bands, I’m always up for discovering a new band.

…hmmm, something tells me mr. Doug could put together a photoshop book that addresses our needs as photographers that would be far superior to anything else out there on the market: hint hint! :)

I love it back east. I lived there for a year and I half. The grave yards are amazing. Everyone in my photography class thought I was strange for my facination. But I am from Utah, and they just don’t have graveyards like that here!!! Great shots. I LOVE Mystic!
